Core Wounds
What are Core Wounds and how do they affect us?
Core Wounds are our limiting beliefs about ourselves. They were formed in childhood as an adaptation mechanism to our environment. Some examples of core wounds are “I am not good enough”, “I am defective”, “I am unlovable”, “I am trapped”, “I am unworthy”, “I am/will be betrayed”, “I am/will be alone”, “I am/will be abandoned”. There are several more, but these ones are the most common.
Different attachment styles do resonate with a particular cluster of core wounds. For instance, dismissive avoidants usually have beliefs “I am trapped”, “I am defective”, “I am unsafe”. For anxiously preoccupied individuals, core wounds “I am unlovable”, “I am alone”, “I am bad”, “I am abandoned” are the strongest. Fearful avoidants usually have most of the core wounds, since they have both sides, anxious and avoidant. However, “I am betrayed” and “I am unworthy” are usually some of the strongest core wounds for fearful avoidants.
Core wounds were adapted as the reaction to repeated words or actions of our caregivers, when we were growing up. Since in most cases they started forming at a very young age when our view about ourselves was still forming, they got ingrained so deep into our subconscious mind. As a result, they are usually mistaken for our personality, but here is the trick. If we believe “this is just who I am”, we are blocking the possibility for ourselves to change and grow. Core wounds are not the reflection of our personality, it is the reaction to triggers.
Change is difficult, because it requires consistent effort on our part. But even more difficult is refusing to change and keep going through the same pattern that creates suffering and dissatisfaction in our life, over and over, just because it is familiar.
Since we were not born with core wounds, but acquired them as a protective mechanism in relation to our environment, it is possible to reprogram them. Since they are ingrained deeply into our subconscious mind, the reprogramming has to be done on subconscious level as well. Positive affirmations alone will not work.
